In February, John Cowie of the Barnegat Volunteer Fire Department hosted a Ready, Set, Go! Train the Trainer event for 75 attendees from 35 fire departments at the Ocean County Training Center in Waretown, New Jersey. The training took place well before wildfire season in hopes of raising department involvement and setting mitigation into motion prior to the strike of wildland fires.
The training was hosted to bring the Ready, Set, Go! message statewide and to educate attendees about New Jersey’s unique wildland fire threat. New Jersey has a unique wildland fire threat, and one that not many residents are aware of. Through this Train-the-Trainer, attendees were able to learn more about the RSG! Program, the risks that New Jersey faces, and best approaches to involving community members to become involved in the mitigation of their properties.
“I think the training will provide the spark we need in New Jersey for our outreach efforts to really take off,” Cowie said. Cowie is already a diligent and involved leader in spreading the RSG message, and this half-day training helped to carry that message onward and outward in the state of New Jersey.
Partners at the training included Bill Edwards, the State Fire Warden, Bill Brash from the NJ Fire Safety Council and the NJ State Forest Fire Service. All shared important information and knowledge from their unique experiences in their roles statewide. They discussed past fires in the surrounding communities and how RSG and mitigation efforts can make a difference in saving homes.
Train-the-Trainers are the product of combined efforts from the hosting agency, RSG staff, and local, county and state level involvement. Successful Train-the-Trainers raise the levels of awareness, provide participants with guidance and tools to take back to their communities, allow personnel to share lessons learned and bring key partners together to work toward a common goal. RSG is happy to assist with any material or presentation needs.
